Charleston Highland Gathering
September 19-21,2008

Charleston. Can anyone ever sing the praises enough of this historic city and the surrounding low country that is so important in so much of our American history?  Its beauty, traditions and the hospitality of its people are everywhere in evidence at the games held at Boone Hall Plantation. Clan Graham has been here for many years and has several proud members.

The 70 degree weather was a first in the many years we have hosted a Graham tent, and the increased attendance made the day for everyone. We had over 40 members and guests visit. Five new registrations were signed, and we had one renewal.  We have encouraged these members to send family history to Nellie Lowry.

Interesting that members John (& Susan) Allardice were here from Bradfordwoods, PA.  He is a former Scottish athlete, and joined with “all the former athletes, judges and support staff who have honored the Charleston games by holding their annual Scottish Heavy Athletics Reunion this year.” – (program). This distinguished group was in the reviewing area for the Parade of Tartans.

Since the beginning 15 years ago, Clan Graham has answered the Call of the Clans at the Friday night torchlight ceremony where the stirring narration gives way as the Clans shout their presence. When finished, the torchlight's form the St. Andrew’s Cross, and this year, a group of about 25 in historic costumes filtered through the ranks in the eerie darkness toward the grandstand area –the ghosts of the past!!!

Just a note to let you know that Louisa G. Graeme's "Or and Sable" has been made available on-line at the following website;   http://inchbrakie.tripod.com/abookofthegraemes/index.html

Ann Belanger, our "Laurel" editor came upon it accidentily and searched further.    I aquired a reprint copy of "Or and Sable" some time ago.    I thought that, if you weren't aware of this site, you might want to look at it and perhaps let the membership know about it on the CGS website.     I  am enjoying the book, but haven't read it all yet.    Interesting !

A New Amateur World Record

ERIC FRASURE - Scottish Heavy Athletics

We knew he had potential but he was only 14 years old when Eric and his

dad, Scott Frasure, began throwing heavy implements in the pasture on

the south side of Neck Road. This pix was his first world record in the 56

lb weight at 49' 8".

Scott Frasure has reported that Eric has won the US Scottish Heavy

Athletics Amateur Championships at Pleasanton, CA. At Dayton, Ohio

Eric broke the Amateur Sheaf World Record with 38'. He won the East

Coast Championships and set a new Amateur World Record in the 28 lb

for distance with a 91' throw. Eric has also broken the North American

Amateur Record in the Hammer that Carl Braun set in 1994 with a 124+

throw. Eric Frasure went to Hopewell High School and is currently on a

track scholarship at East Carolina University. Scott and Eric thank the

CVSS for their support over the years.
